The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) incurs a loss of Rs. 36 from every unit due to providing electricity at current prices, Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said yesterday.

He said due to the increase in the US dollar against the rupee and the increase in fuel and coal prices in the world market, the electricity generation cost has increased significantly.

Ratnayake said the production cost per unit of electricity currently stands at Rs. 53. However, the CEB charges only Rs. 17 from consumers per unit.
