The Education Ministry has taken a decision to begin academic activities of all Colleges of Education soon.
On the directive of the Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena all Colleges of Education will open for students on January 15 (Saturday) aiming to commence academic activities on January 18 (Tuesday).
Moves are under way to expedite the establishment of a new College of Education to train teachers to teach students, who are currently studying Technology in the Advanced Level stream of schools. It has been noticed that there is a scarcity of teachers for technology subjects.
At present there are 19 Colleges of Education island-wide and the number will increase to 20 with the opening of a new College of Education for Teacher Training in Technology Stream. At present, 7,784 students are undergoing teacher training in the 19 Colleges of Education and 4,547 of them are completing their qualifications for teaching. Minister Gunawardena also instructed officials to recruit them as teachers soon as per the relevant process. Besides he has also instructed to expedite the process of enrolling of new students to the Colleges of Education.
Certain Colleges of Education were closed to be used as COVID treatment centres for the public and all of them are scheduled to open for academic activities on January 18.
