Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said 102,000 tonnes of fertilizer currently stored in fertilizer companies are now being distributed to farmer communities through their respective Agrarian Service Centres.
He said this fertilizer distribution process will be completed within the next few weeks and farmer communities should not get agitated over any fertilizer shortage in the country.
The Minister also said steps have already been taken by the Government to manufacture adequate organic fertilizer in the country and also import necessary fertilizer for the use of next ‘Maha’ season.
The Minister said the country has also adequate chemical fertilizer stocks to utilize for the next ‘Maha’. season. Minister Aluthgamage once again mentioned that the Government has not yet taken any action to import chemical fertilizer and already taken a decision to encourage farmer communities and farmer organizations in their respective areas to produce adequate organic fertilizer. Nuwaraeliya District Secretary Nandana Galabada said distribution of chemical fertilizer to vegetable and horticulture farmers in the district has begun now.
