Former regime neglected responsibilities – Cardinal

Must read

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith alleged that knowing the details of the Easter attacks the Government concealed the information aiming for election victories.

He was speaking during a Special Mass held at the St. Anthony’s Shrine in Padua, Italy on Sunday (01).

The delegation, led by the Archbishop, left the country for Rome on April 22 at the invitation of the Pope and attended a special Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on April 25. The group visited several churches in Rome and participated in Holy Mass. The group is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, May 4 at 9.00 am onboard a Qatar Airways flight.

The Cardinal, in his sermon at the Special Service also said, “His Holiness Pope Francis wrote me in a handwritten letter in March asking me what he could do for us. We were not told of the warnings regarding an attack. Had they told us, we could have saved many lives. From the then President to the then heads of the security units, they are all guilty of neglecting their responsibilities. They did so knowingly. They hid the facts with the aim of winning the election. They circulated the warning letter among themselves and eventually our innocent people were sacrificed. I am confident that those engaged in the struggle will emerge victorious. All Catholic leaders came here to show that we will not cow down to political power. Over the past 75 years, politicians acted to safeguard their power. They are all to blame.

They created animosity among races in this country. The 1978 Constitution created a dictatorial President and ruined the country. Hence, we need to change this system and bring in a new Sri Lanka with equality, unity and brotherhood. We don’t need a country in this current state, we must change,” Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said.
