Galle Fort cliff jumpers to get alternative spot

Must read

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has instructed the Archaeology Department to introduce an alternative plan for youths to continue with the adventurous ‘cliff jumping activities’ in the Galle Fort.

The minister has instructed department officials of this during a meeting held on Wednesday. It was reported last Friday that the youths will not be able to continue their cliff jumping at the usual place which they engaged in for nearly 15 years due to the ongoing archaeological conservation work at the spot.

At the meeting, it was revealed that the cliff jumping has not been completely hampered and that only one of their activities has been affected due to a stone wall erected at the site. The officials pointed out that the conservation work is being carried out with the assistance of the World Bank after the recent excavations had exposed the base and flagpole of the old lighthouse.

The minister directed officials to provide the youth with a safe place as an alternative to continue their jumping activities, which has attracted local and foreign tourists there.
