Money, Capital Market, and State Enterprises Reform State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal has confirmed reports that he would accept the Central Bank Governor’s post, SLPP MP Jagath Kumara said.

Responding to a question by a journalist at a press conference at the SLPP Headquarters yesterday, he said the State Minister, when contacted by him, confirmed that he was to succeed incumbent Governor Prof W D Lakshman.

Cabraal served as the CB Governor from 2009 to 2015. “He is well-experienced in this field. He will resign from the Parliament Seat and the State Ministerial post to take up the new post.

He will do that willingly and upon a request by the President and the Finance Minister. As the country is faced with financial difficulties, the Central Bank affairs need to be handled efficiently and correctly. State Minister Cabraal accepted the challenge on behalf of the country. On his part it is a sacrifice. We must be thankful to him,” he commented.

Asked who would replace Cabraal in Parliament, the MP said that it will be decided by the Party and a final decision has not been taken yet.
