The IGP is responsible for national security – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) who is also a member of the National Security Council has the responsibility to closely peruse and take all necessary action on prior intelligence or forewarnings regarding any threat to national security, IGP C.D. Wickramaratne said.

IGP C.D. Wickramaratne was testifying before the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar to record evidence over the case filed against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara for failing to take proper action in connection with the series of Easter Sunday terror attacks that took place on April 21,2019.

“The IGP is not like a normal Government servant.

He is a member of the National Security Council who is responsible for national security. State intelligence is not required to provide any information to the IGP as complete intelligence. The IGP should improve any information provided by the intelligence services and take appropriate action in this regard,” Wickramaratne said.

IGP Wickramaratne was yesterday appeared before the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar to record evidence over the case filed against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara for failing to take proper action in connection with the series of Easter Sunday terror attacks that took place on April 21 in 2019.

Before commencement of IGP Wickramaratne’s testimony, former State Intelligence Service Chief Nilantha Jayawardena, the first witness in the case, testified before the Court that he had not given any intelligence to former IGP Pujith Jayasundara about an attack until April 20, 2019 and had only provided information about Zahran Hashim. Jayawardena was responding to a cross-examination by Attorney-at-Law Roshan Dehiwala, who appeared for the accused, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara. The case will be taken up again on January 18 for further trial. SDSG Dileepa Pieris and Deputy Solicitor General appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
